A R RAHMAN IN BRIEF (TOI,Mum,24Feb09,Pg14)
Born January 6, 1967, was named Dilip Kumar
Father RK Sekhar was a music director and mother Kasturi (later Kareema Begum), a homemaker. Has three sisters: Kanchana (Raihanah), Balasaraswathy (Fatima) and Rekha (Izrat)
As a child, Dilip loved to play chess and carom
Studied at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan until Std IX, then moved to Madras Christian College. Dropped out of Class XI at MCC to pursue a career in music as the family needed the money
Father died when he was nine, and family had to hire Sekhar’s instruments to make ends meet
Drawn to music from an early age, could play many instruments, had many gurus.
Learnt to play the guitar from Pilot Edwin, piano from Jacob John, Hindustani classical from Krishna Anand (briefly) and film music from Nityanandan
Took Trinity College of Music exams in Chennai and the then principal Gavin Anderson described Rahman as “a talent to watch out for”
Early in his career, he was associated with many musical troupes, including Ilayaraja’s. He worked for Telugu and Kannada films, assisting Raj-Koti, Vijay Anand and Chakravarti
He started composing ad jingles in 1986, the memorable ones being for Titan and Leo Coffee. A tune he composed for a leading telecom company has become the world’s most downloaded piece of music clocking 60 million hits
Roja’s release in 1992 made him a star. Mani Ratnam gave him the break, and AR Rahman became famous overnight
Although he had converted to Islam much earlier, he officially changed his name to AR Rahman only in 1992
With ‘Roja’ ruling the charts, Time magazine hailed him as the Mozart of Madras: Rahmania had taken country by storm
Close on the heels of Roja’s success, USbased Indian producers of a film approached him to score music. He rejected the offer; there was a nude scene in the film and the young bachelor wanted nothing to do with it
Rahman bridged the gap between the Tamil and Hindi film industry. Soon enough, the rest of the world took note.
Ram Gopal Varma invited him to score for ‘Rangeela’, Subhash Ghai for ‘Taal’, Ashutosh Gowarikar for ‘Lagaan’, Shekhar Kapur (‘Elizabeth II’) and Andrew Lloyd Webber ('Bombay Dreams’)
Kareema Begum spotted Saira Banu at a dargah, proposals were exchanged and one of Chennai's most eligible bachelors got married in 1995
The couple have three children —Khatija, Rahima and Ameen (who shares his birthday with his father). The children lead a life free of celebrity trappings — with school, family and games in the courtyard
Rahman’s personal space is his studio, where Carnatic, Hindustani, Arabic, Latino, European folk, Indian folk, hip hop and every other genre of sound finds space. A rural Tamil voice, a Spanish contralto or a typical American mid-West drawl — you can hear all of them here
His inner circle comprises his mother, wife and children
Professionally, he has a good rapport with everyone in the industry, although Rajiv Menon and Bharat Bala are the people whose judgment he trusts the most

Underworld comes calling on tech capital (ET,Mum,24Feb09,Pg3)
A NUMBER of Bangalore’s real estate tycoons are scurrying for cover after extortion threats from a former associate of underworld don Chhota Rajan. This is the first time prominent businessmen in India’s tech capital have been targeted by the organised crime.
Ravi Pujari, a gangster reportedly based in Australia, has made calls demanding money from four of the city’s top builders, sending chill of fear across a cash-strapped real estate industry which is battling a steep downturn in demand.
Tough journey for sound wizard (ET,Mum,24Feb09,Pg4)
After travelling on a path lined with hardship, Resul Pookutty brings home a well-deserved Oscar for best sound mixing
ONE sound Resul Pookutty may not want to hear is mischief-makers chanting Pookutty, Pookutty! Back home in Kerala, the word Pookutty, a common surname, also means flower child and it could also be twisted to mean dead drunk in Malayalam.
Resul, however, may not mind a bit of banter, now that he has won of the biggest battle of his very difficult life — to have a sense of achievement. Appetite, illusion and achievement have been the favoured flavour of this Oscars. And Resul has a fair share of all three. Says GR Menon, his teacher and former head of direction at the FTII: “He was very focused. What I found remarkable about him is that unlike other students who take technical courses, Resul had a flair for direction. He was a total filmmaking student.”
And Resul has literally slummed it out to reach here. Belonging to Vilakkupara, a small village in Kerala’s Kollam district, Resul had to walk 6 km to the nearest school and study under the light of a kerosene lamp as there was no electricity in the village. This arduous life must have taught him enough lessons about sound and silence.
Reliance to acquire oil storages in US (ET,Mum,24Feb09,Pg6)
RELIANCE Industries (RIL) will soon acquire clean storages in the US East Coast and the Gulf Coast to sell huge volumes of fuel, said a senior official, putting in place its global infrastructure that will cement its swing-supplier role. “We are looking for storages in the East Coast, the Gulf Coast and the West Coast.
India slips to No. 54 in competitiveness (ET,Mum,24Feb09,Pg11)
INDIA has slipped three notches in the Unido’s industrial competitiveness index to feature at the 54th position. The country’s ranking in the competitive industrial performance (CIP) index went down to 54 in 2005 from 51 in 2000, according to the Industrial Development Report, 2009, released here on Monday.
The comforting feature was that India has been placed just a notch below Australia in the index that measured competitiveness in 122 countries, he said.
According to the report, India alone accounts for nearly 80% of south Asian manufacturing value addition. “South Asia’s performance is driven by India, where electrical machinery and apparatus, iron and steel processing of nuclear fuel and chemicals grew quite rapidly,” the report added.

Another Indian saga wins an Oscar... (BT,Mum,24Feb09,Pg1)
India was definitely the flavour of the 81st Academy Awards this year. It’s not only through Slumdog Millionaire that India was shining on the international stage; another American filmmaker Megan Mylan won the Best Short Documentary award for her film Smile Pinki which is a heartwarming tale of a poor Indian village girl whose cleft lip made her a social outcast.
It traces Pinki’s journey from being ostracised to being treated like a normal girl after a social worker helped her undergo surgery.

Investment & Wealth Creation Advice:
Please note that our advice is primarily for investors and not for speculators. Investors typically invest with 12-60 month investment perspective. You will therefore find that our advice does not change substantially from issue to issue.
We expect Sensex to come down to 7000-8000 level in the next few months. So, it is going to be a very good time for investments in good stocks.
Also, those who want to invest in realty in India should wait for some time as the flat and land prices are expected to come down substantially in the next 3-4 quarters.
Do consult your investment advisor before making any investment decisions.
Do not purchase shares of a good company at a wrong price. Also, do not purchase shares of a bad company even at a very low price.
Do not put all your eggs in one basket. Diversify your portfolio to de-risk. Do not put more than 33% of your investible funds in stocks or mutual funds. Do not invest in stocks, mutual funds or realty when their prices are quite high. From the high levels, these prices normally come down by about 40-50% and that is when many people lose their hard earned money in a big way.
Make sure that you are not one of those big losers. Make sure that you invest when prices are low and divest when prices are high. Please note that 2009 is going to be a great year for investing your money in stocks, mutual funds & realty in India.
