PM takes call, India says hello to 3G (TOI, Mum, Pg 1)
New Delhi: India entered the third generation mobile era on Thursday with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh launching the country’s first 3G network by receiving an inaugural video call and viewing live television on a 3G-enabled mobile handset.
The call was made using the MTNL network at the inauguration of India Telecom 2008, a global telecom meet organized by FICCI. “This marks a paradigm shift in the use of mobiles. With up to 2 Mbps capacity, consumers can make video calls, view live TV, get video surveillance of their homes or offices on their handsets and,of course, access email speedily,’’ R S P Sinha, MTNL’s CMD, said.
India can look forward to a host of enhanced services before the end of 2009. The 3G services will be available in Mumbai next year and later in Chennai.

US, UK tone down travel advisories (ET, Mum, Pg 1)
In what is seen as a reflection of foreign governments’ belief that the situation in Mumbai has improved, many of them have now started toning down the warnings issued to their citizens just after the November 26 terror attacks.
The US, the UK, the Netherlands and Canada have all changed their old advisories. The development could give a fillip to the tourism industry, which has been hard hit by the recent attacks.

‘IT’S GREAT TO BE SEXY’ (BT, Mum, Pg 1)
... says Katrina Kaif who was voted Asia’s Sexiest Woman over Bips, Priyanka, Bebo and Ash
She’s beautiful, stylish, witty, successful and she’s sensational, dahlings, that’s why we all love Katrina Kaif. We’ve even heard cutesy tales of young girls gifting this gorgeous gal ‘stuffed toys’ with mucho love and affection.
But now, we’re worried that a certain Mr Hugh Hefner should cast his ‘appreciative’ eye in Katz’s direction. (And probably send her some ‘stuffed bunnies’.) Why so? ‘Coz now she’s been voted ‘sexiest’ Asian babe too.
The poll is an annual shindig run by an ethnic Asian magazine in the UK. And in a sweeping statement Katrina was voted ‘Sexiest Asian Woman Alive’ for 2008. With this she pushes Bipasha Basu (last year’s winner) to second spot. Priyanka Chopra, who wowed everyone with her perfect curves in a gold swimsuit recently, came in third and Kareena’s lemony swimwear act got her fourth place in a poll dominated by our Bollywood desi girls.
Evergreen beauty Aishwarya Rai’s marriage did nothing to dim her appeal, as she came in seventh. New entrants to this local ‘sexiest list’ included Pakistani actress Mehwish Hayat (9), Pantaloon’s Femina Miss India Universe Simran Kaur Mundi (10), former Miss Sri Lanka Jacqueline Fernandez (12) and South Indian and Ghajini star Asin (22).
Katz was overjoyed at the result, but was her usual shy ‘n’ modest self when we congratulated her. “It feels good when a fan-based or a viewer-based community votes for you and thinks that you’re good. And this particular poll is pretty popular among the Asian community in the UK. I was floored and I am grateful to all those who voted for me. It’s great,” said Asia’s sexiest woman.
We did ask her how she related to the word ‘sexy’ now, after ‘beautiful’. She laughed, “I guess ‘sexy’ is just another adjective when people like you. I take it as a compliment.”
And how would other ‘displaced’ beauties feel? “Oh! It’s just part of a process. The industry is a happy family. We’re all happy for each other. Next year I may be down a notch or vice versa. It’s nice to be voted but it shouldn’t go to anyone’s head. I’m sure everyone feels like that.”
Hmmmn! Don’t be so ‘cool’ girl. Now the real real test is coming up. The true-blue international poll – The ZOOM – 50 Most Desirable show. That's where our guys ‘n’ dolls hafta score, huh? And those scoring in the top five there are the true ‘sex symbols’, guys. Then Mr Hefner sure will have his eyes in a roll — as for a certain Mr Khan, we’d say hold on to your gals (and your breath) — this one’s gonna be a fight, dear dudes and dudettes. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
