India Salutes Its Unknown Soldier (TOI,Mum,31Dec08,Pg1)
It’s an indicator of the kind of year we have had that Bollywood, cricket stars and political biggies became also-rans in our annual survey to determine the Indian of the Year. This year, the votes were overwhelmingly for the Indian soldier and for slain Maharashtra anti-terrorism squad chief Hemant Karkare, with the celebrities way behind.
Just over one-fourth of all respondents in an eight-city poll picked the unknown but heroic soldier as the Indian of the Year (26% votes), with Karkare close behind with 24%.
M S Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar were in a dead heat for third spot, but with just 8% votes each, they were not even in the same race.

NO PARTY , TONIGHT! (BT,Mum,31Dec08,Pg1)
BOLLYWOOD HAS NO PLANS TO WELCOME IN 2009... THOUGH EVERYBODY IS HAPPY TO SEE THE LAST OF 2008
Not many people are celebrating New Year this time... there is nothing special being done to bring in 2009; perhaps because the pain and suffering of 2008 will remain long after December 31, the memories of 26/11 will carry on forever.
Bollywood, which felt the effects of the terrorist attacks on Mumbai as much as anybody else, has no special plan for 31st night.
When BT asked its bold and beautiful denizens where the party was, this is what they said about their plans for New Year’s night...
KAREENA KAPOOR: I’m going to be in the European mountains with Saif. I’m looking forward to the peace and time out after working round-the-clock. I desperately need a holiday. Sadly, it’s only for a week. Just the two of us.
RANI MUKERJI: I haven’t planned anything. I’ll be working.
ABHISHEK BACHCHAN: No plans at all. Probably be with the family.
PREITY ZINTA: It’s going to be a sporty new year. I’m going skiing. In Mumbai you never get to see winter.
AJAY DEVGAN: Every year I’m at my farm in Karjat with my family for New Year.
BIPASHA BASU: I’m in Hong Kong where I’m shooting for two days. Then I disappear into some place for four days for the New Year.
SHILPA SHETTY: I’ll be in Spain with the people who matter the most to me.
PRIYANKA CHOPRA: I’ll be out of town with those who matter the most to me, my family. Parties and celebrations are certainly not my scene. Not this year, specially, when our city has suffered so much.
URMILA MATONDKAR: There are no New Year plans. We’ve been through so much. I just want to spend time with my family.
