GUWAHATI: Five people were killed and over 50 injured in three blasts set off by insurgent outfit ULFA in Guwahati on Thursday hours before Union home minister P Chidambaram's visit to review law and order situation in the state rocked by deadly blasts that left 88 dead two months ago.

Pay or face fidayeen fury, Dhoni warned (TOI,Mum,01Jan09,Pg1)

Ranchi: Indian cricket team skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni received another threat letter on Wednesday through ordinary post, triggering an extraordinary security flurry and panic.

The letter, which arrived when Dhoni was at his Ranchi home, was addressed to his father Pan Singh and bore the title “levy patra’’. It threatened a fidayeen attack if Rs 50 lakh wasn’t paid to the senders.

A similar demand letter had arrived on December 29 and Dhoni’s family had handed it to Ranchi police.

Kylie Minogue to sell house at half price (TOI,Mum,31Dec08,Pg20)

Kylie Minogue has been forced to slash the price of her Australian holiday home by half after being hit by the credit crunch. Minogue, 40, bought the island retreat near her native Melbourne in 2005. Valued between £800,000-924,000, Minogue put the four-bedroom home on sale in February. But the singer has been forced to drop the asking price to £439,000, reported mirror.co.uk.

2009: Year for long term investors

If 2008 was the year that witnessed an unprecedented crisis of confidence, 2009 could be one of re-building confidence among market participants.

With inflation coming down, leading to lower interest rates, several blue chips are at multi-year lows and insurance companies are showing a marked shift from unit linked plans, the year is sure to throw up interesting long term investment opportunities for investors.

Foreign airlines’ Indian dreams set to take wing (ET,Mum,01Jan09,Pg1)

Overseas Carriers May Get To Own 25%

THE government is considering a proposal to allow foreign airlines such as Singapore Airlines, British Airways and Lufthansa to pick up equity stakes in domestic carriers, but with riders.

It is preparing the ground for a major policy shift on foreign ownership in aviation. Foreign airlines may be allowed to own 20-25% in local carriers but influence will be limited on boards and in management. Foreign cos other than airlines are currently allowed to hold up to 49% in domestic carriers.

‘TO BE THE CHANGE WE WANT’ (BT,Mum,01Jan09,Pg1)
BOLLYWOOD MAKES NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS THAT AREN’T LIKELY TO BE BROKEN IN 2009

New Year resolutions are meant to be broken. But, somehow, in 2009 we get the feeling that almost everyone will mean what they say... and strive to do what they promise.

Maybe the aftermath, the memory of 26/11 is responsible for this. But people want change in their lives, and the terror attacks on the city — that could have claimed anyone — have made people realise that life is unpredictable. You have to seize every moment and live it to its fullest.

That’s what the stars and opinionmakers of Bollywood have said in this poll conducted by BT on the eve of 2009.

Shah Rukh Khan: ‘TO BE LIKE A KING’ - I have many New Year resolutions. Like, to work hard, get better physical health, and make more smiles happen through my work. And I have hopes as well... like, I hope Knight Riders wins the IPL, my film Billu Barber does well, I hope I am able to make all the films happen that I want to.

May the kids learn a new thing or two this year... hope they are healthy and positive about the world they live in... hope that my friends have happiness surrounding them... and, of course, I hope to win some awards this year, take some holidays with my children... just them and me. And generally give and forgive... like a King... not get and forget God...

May all who suffered in 2008 find a positive ray of light in the New Year...

Salman Khan: ‘I WANT TO TOUCH LIVES’ - I want to keep myself abreast of current happenings more than before. I also wish to give back the love I have got from people and make a conscious effort to make everyone happy and touch their lives.

Hema Malini: ‘TO BE HAPPY’ - To be happy, like always, and spread happiness through everything I can.

Investment & Wealth Creation Advice:

We expect the Sensex to go up by about thousand points in the next couple of weeks. However, we expect it to go to 7000-8000 level in 2009.

Some of you may like to book profit or exit some stocks in the next couple of weeks as the market is expected to fall substantially in 2009.

Also, those who want to invest in realty in India should wait for some time as the flat and land prices are expected to come down substantially in the next 3-4 quarters.
