India adds to strategic depth by launching nuclear submarine
Joins Select Club Of Nations With Indigenously Built INS Arihant
Visakhapatnam: It may be a ‘baby’ but it’s a ‘boomer’ alright. India’s new stealth nuke weapon packs an awesome punch, armed as it is with 12 nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles in four silos on its ‘hump’, as also a wide array of anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles and torpedoes.
India’s long-awaited first indigenous nuclear-powered submarine equipped with ballistic missiles, dubbed an SSBN or a ‘boomer’ in western military parlance, INS Arihant, was formally launched by flooding the dry dock at the heavily-guarded Shipbuilding Centre here on Sunday.
What’s A Nuclear Submarine?
It’s an underwater vessel powered by a nuclear reactor. Other submarines need to surface for recharging, but an N-sub can stay submerged for long periods. INS Arihant (Sanskrit for ‘destroyer of enemies’) puts India in elite club of 6 nations (along with US, Russia, France, UK and China) that possess N-sub capabilities.
Arihant’s vital statistics
Length: 110m Weight: 6,000t Powered by: Single shaft 80mw nuclear power plant Speed: 28kmph (surface); 44kmph (underwater) Capability: Can fire 700km range K-15 missile, may later fire cruise missiles.

Patient’s own stem cells used to cure cancer
In A Medical First, Docs Save Recipient Of Kidney Transplant
Mumbai: For 15 years, Rakesh Singh (name changed) went about his high-pressure job as a senior engineer in a central government firm with a transplanted kidney. Daily, he would pop immuno-suppressant pills to prevent his body from rejecting the donated organ.
Then, about 18 months ago, he was struck by an “explosive’’ form of cancer called multiple myeloma—big boils erupted across and within his body, impairing his ability to sign and speak.
Singh’s disease put doctors at Jaslok Hospital in a bind about what line of treatment to follow: reducing the immuno-suppressants to let his body fight the cancer cells could have led to a possible rejection of the kidney. It was then decided to give him a second transplant—of the bone marrow this time—with his own stem cells. Today, Singh is cancer-free and a medical marvel of sorts.
Indian journalist attacked in Australia
MELBOURNE: A young Indian journalist was threatened and attacked after she went underground to reveal migration and education scams in Australia that try to defraud international students, including those from India.
The woman, working as a reporter with ABC TV, was threatened during the making of the program 'Four Corners' and was attacked over the weekend.
The attack assumes significance in the wake of a series of racially-motivated attacks on Indian students in Australian cities.

Rakhi Sawant’s NRI hubby will move to Mumbai
Rakhi Sawant, who’s getting married live on TV on August 2, has made it very clear that she wouldn’t be leaving her work behind to join her husband.
Nor would she like a ghar-damaad kind of house-husband.
While she was all set to settle for a long-distance marriage, Toronto-based entrepreneur Elesh Parujanwala has done the next best thing. He has decided to shift base to Mumbai from Toronto.
Speaking from his hideout in Mumbai, Elesh was surprisingly calm and clear-headed about his future plans. “There won’t be any need for a long-distance marriage, or for Rakhi to join me in Toronto. I’ve already shifted a part of my business from Toronto to Mumbai and I intend to stay put in Mumbai for a very long time.”
Speaking on how a well-to-do Canadian-Indian boy ended up being on a show where he’s one of Rakhi Sawant’s prospective grooms Elesh laughed, “At first I was skeptical. In fact, I initially expressed my misgivings to the programme’s creators. I didn’t want my children to one day ask me why I married their mom on a game show. But I’m glad I came on Rakhi Ka Swayamvar. It isn’t a game, though it may be a show being watched by millions. For Rakhi and for me it’s a matter of life and death.”
Elesh says he grew up on a staple diet of Bollywood in Toronto. “I used to watch Rakhi Sawant in her films and her music videos. At that time I never thought I’d one day be asking her hand for marriage. Life is funny.”
Incidentally, the decision to marry Elesh above the other short-listed candidates came from Rakhi’s ‘brother’ Ravi Kissan, who apparently reprimanded her strongly for even considering any of the other boys.
Says Ravi, “Elesh always stood out. And I told Rakhi this. The less said about some of the other contestants the better. One of them, Manmohan Tiwari, had so much attitude, it was almost like he was trying to be the small screen’s Ravi Kissan. Sadly, the channel encouraged him to behave the way he did, arguing that it enhanced the TRPs. He behaved very badly with Rakhi. He had a girlfriend tucked away all the time. Why was he wooing Rakhi then? I told her Elesh was the best guy for her.”

Investment & Wealth Creation Advice:
Please note that our advice is primarily for investors and not for speculators. Investors typically invest with 12-60 month investment perspective. You will therefore find that our advice does not change substantially from issue to issue.
We expect Sensex to come down to about 11,000 level in the next couple of months. We expect Sept-Oct 09 period to be a very good period for making investments in good stocks / mutual funds in India. So, do plan your investments in advance. Do systematic investment (SIP) during these 2 months.
Also, those who want to invest in realty in India should wait for some time as the flat and land prices are expected to come down substantially in the next 1-2 quarters.
Do consult your investment advisor before making any investment decisions.
Do not purchase shares of a good company at a wrong price. Also, do not purchase shares of a bad company even at a very low price.
Do not put all your eggs in one basket. Diversify your portfolio to de-risk. Do not put more than 33% of your investible funds in stocks and/or mutual funds. Put 33% in Fixed-Interest instruments and the remaining 33% in real estate when real estate prices are low.
Do not invest in stocks, mutual funds or realty when their prices are quite high. From the high levels, these prices normally come down by about 40-50% and that is when many people lose their hard earned money in a big way.
Make sure that you are not one of those big losers.
Make sure that you invest when prices are low (and that is the case in 2009) and divest when prices are high (which will be the case in Q1-2011).
Please note that Aug-Oct 2009 is expected to be a great period for investing your money in stocks & mutual funds in India.
