US drones fire into north-west Pak; 8 killed
PESHAWAR: At least eight suspected militants were killed on Sunday in reported US missile strikes in northwest Pakistan near the Afghan border, security officials said. At least two missiles believed to have been fired by US drones hit a house in a Pakistani region known as a safe haven for al-Qaida militants on Sunday, officials said.
Recession forcing NRIs to dip into savings back home
The economic crisis in the United States and Britain is reportedly forcing many NRIs to dip into their savings and assets back home. Due to job losses, default of mortgage payments and losses in their businesses, some NRIs are cashing their foreign currency demand deposits in India to stay afloat.
According to a World Bank economist and an expert on immigrant remittances, Dilip Ratha, foreign currency deposits in India have declined by 12 percent between January and December 2008 from $41.2 billion to $36.1 billion.
India win fourth Test, series with New Zealand
AUCKLAND: A double strike in the second half gave India a 2-0 win in the fourth and final men's field hockey Test against New Zealand on Sunday, giving them a series win by the same margin.
India's Dilip Tirkey and Sandeep Singh stepped up after a scoreless first half. Tirkey nailed a penalty corner strike in the 43rd minute and Singh followed suit in the 67th minute, flicking the ball into the top left of the goal.
Boy shoots at teacher (TOI,Mum,01Mar09,Pg1)
A 16-year-old Lucknow school student shot at his class teacher after he refused to give him the admit card. While the teacher has been hospitalised, the boy fled after the shooting.
EMPEROR ROCKS ON (TOI,Mum,01Mar09,Pg1)
‘Jodhaa Akbar’ Bags 5 Idea Filmfare Awards, ‘Rock On!’ 6
A series of breezy one-liners turned the 54th Idea Filmfare Awards 2008 into a laugh riot.
The function, which was held at the YRF Studio in Andheri on Saturday night, was packed out with the A-listers of the film fraternity as well as a set of new and emerging actors and technicians who were making their debut this year and were rewarded for it. The plush red carpet was a veritable fashion parade of desi and foreign designer wear.
From the moment they walked the red carpet, Farhan Akhtar and Arjun Rampal seemed sure they would sweep the awards for Rock On! with Arjun even confident of a double-figure tally. As the night progressed, the Magik of the film unfolded by the degree. Rock On! swept six awards, and the runners up were Jodhaa Akbar and Imran Khan’s debut film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. A nice twist was the small Abhay Deol-starrer Oye Lucky Lucky Oye which whistled its way to several wins.
Rock On’s sweep was halted in its tracks by the sudden emergence of the period romance Jodhaa Akbar which won Best Actor for Hrithik Roshan (director Ashutosh Gowarikar collected it on his behalf) as well as Best Film and Best Director for Gowarikar. The Best Actress trophy went to Priyanka Chopra for Fashion, which took even director Madhur Bhandarkar by surprise.
The tone of the evening was set by Farhan Akhtar’s mind-blowing rock ensemble act with Ehassan and Loy, which quelled the audience’s disappointment that Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan were not hosting the show this year with their wicked humour.

‘I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE IN BOLLYWOOD’ (BT,Mum,01Mar09,Pg1)
Kylie Minogue, international pop star, actress and chart buster, opens up to BT at Akshay Kumar’s house
The lunch was eclectic, Mediterranean salads, Parsi patra ni macchi, Goan fish curry and brown rice, the season’s first Alphonso mangoes with ice-cream for dessert. Kylie Minogue, petite and sweet as against pin-up girl sexy, ate with delicate relish in Twinkle and Akshay Kumar’s Juhu Beach living room.
In the background, Singh Is Kingg was playing softly on the music system, but I doubt the Australian singer and actress knew the song was picturised on her suave and charming host. Neither did she know that Akshay, with whom she is doing a song for A R Rahman in the film Blue, is a superstar here. Though Bollywood, coming to India and doing a Hindi film, was always on her mind.
Now she is here, Bollywood is happening, and Kylie is “loving the little experiences she’s been having ever since she landed in Mumbai on Wednesday night”.
She said over a cup of coffee after lunch, “I love to be taken out of my... well, not my comfort zone, but my world... this is certainly far different from anything I’ve done before.” By which she meant the whole experience of getting involved with Bollywood and doing the film Blue. “Three days — that’s all it took,” she revealed. “I presented Rahman the award at the BAFTA, next day we met to discuss the concept of the song and the lyrics, third day we recorded! The whole experience was new. I’m not used to recording a song at the last minute and not knowing what I’m going to be wearing the next day. But this is not my world, I don’t know different, yet I have confidence in the film’s team, and went along...”
Kylie plays herself in Blue, it’s a performance based role, she has a scene with Akshay and she’s in two songs — yes, with Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta and Zayed Khan as well. And though she’s been singing and acting all her professional life, this time it’s different. “The technical aspects are much the same. It’s just that this is not part of an album. And being in the studio with Rahman is magical, he’s on the crest of a wave, but is such a generous spirit, very welcoming, he’s relaxed and calm... such a nice person,” she said describing the Indian music genius who’s just back from the Academy Awards with two Oscars. The music they make together in the film is of the pop genre. “It’s definitely got an Indian beat,” Kylie said, “and it’s not difficult... certainly not a challenge for Rahman.”
The challenge, instead, is for Akshay Kumar. “I have to match her steps,” the actor said, “usually I hear the song, try to understand the lyrics, and see who I’m supposed to be singing to in the film... my girlfriend, wife, sister or mother.” Kylie asked him, “How many songs have you done?” He shrugged, “Count five songs in, say, 120 films... how much is that? About 750 songs. And 400 shows!” She looked at the hero with admiration and remarked, “Wow, he’s been busy!” Strangely, she’s seen only one of his films, Heyy Babyy, and that too a tiny bit of it. “But he’s a fun person and I cannot wait to begin work with him,” she added.
Work, the studios, shooting and singing were still a day away. And Kylie Minogue was enjoying Mumbai. “Everything and anything about Mumbai,” she laughed, “everywhere I turn, it’s an assault on my senses in the best way.” Was there anything she wanted to do in particular here? “Yes,” admitted Bollywood’s new debutant, “I’m always doing things glamorous, but now I want to jump into an autorickshaw and go for a spin. They remind me of the tuk-tuks in Bangkok... so dirty and uncomfortable, polluted, you feel hot in them, but so what... you’re part of that city. Let’s see if I can get Akshay to join me.”
And Akshay Kumar gave her a sunshine smile.

Investment & Wealth Creation Advice:
Please note that our advice is primarily for investors and not for speculators. Investors typically invest with 12-60 month investment perspective. You will therefore find that our advice does not change substantially from issue to issue.
We expect Sensex to come down to 7000-8000 level in the next few months. So, it is going to be a very good time for investments in good stocks.
Also, those who want to invest in realty in India should wait for some time as the flat and land prices are expected to come down substantially in the next 3-4 quarters.
Do consult your investment advisor before making any investment decisions.
Do not purchase shares of a good company at a wrong price. Also, do not purchase shares of a bad company even at a very low price.
Do not put all your eggs in one basket. Diversify your portfolio to de-risk. Do not put more than 33% of your investible funds in stocks or mutual funds. Do not invest in stocks, mutual funds or realty when their prices are quite high. From the high levels, these prices normally come down by about 40-50% and that is when many people lose their hard earned money in a big way.
Make sure that you are not one of those big losers. Make sure that you invest when prices are low and divest when prices are high. Please note that 2009 is going to be a great year for investing your money in stocks, mutual funds & realty in India.
