Cricket: Bowling greats rank low on ICC all-time list (TOI,Mum,16Jan09,Pg1)

How would you react if someone suggested that South African speedster Dale Steyn, after just 30 Tests and three memorable seasons, is a far greater Test bowler than Dennis Lillee, Allan Donald, Wasim Akram or Brett Lee? Well, ‘someone’ actually has. And it’s no less an authority than cricket’s supreme decision making body itself—the International Cricket Council.

If you thought ICC’s list of all-time greats in batting was a shocker, just check out the bowlers. There you will find Steyn at No 22 in the league of the 100 best-ever Test bowlers while Lillee, Donald, Akram and Lee find themselves down below at 34th, 26th, 59th and 67th spots, respectively.

These Sikhnis have an eye on Miss Kaur crown (TOI,Mum,16Jan09,Pg8)

The Dadar gurdwara is the scene of an unlikely revolution. A svelte beauty wearing low-waist jeans is reciting the Jap Sahib to her neighbour. At the head of the table, a team of beauty experts is handing out customised grooming tips for the next day’s beauty pageant.

On Friday evening, 19 beautiful Sikhnis who avoid trimming their hair and wear the shining kada on their wrist will compete for the title of Miss Kaur International 2009, likely the first beauty contest in India being held exclusively for Sikh women.

Two years ago, Puran Singh Banga who heads the Sat Sri Akaal Charitable Trust started the Mr Singh contest for Sikh men. Now comes its female avatar, Miss Kaur International.

Satyam employee killed in US (TOI,Mum,16Jan09,Pg12)
26-Year-Old Andhra Resident Shot While Returning From Work

Exactly four years after he left for the US on Bhogi Pongal, 26-yearold Satyam employee N Akshay Vishal, a resident of Hyderabad, was killed in Arkansas. Akshay, who was shot at as he was returning from work, succumbed to bullet injuries while undergoing treatment at Methodist Medical Center in Little Rock Town, Arkansas, on January 14, a day after he was shot.

He is the seventh Indian student or professional from Andhra to have been murdered in the US in the last 15 months.

Chandra set to head TCS (TOI,Mum,16Jan09,Pg21)
Tata Cos Prepare For Leadership Change

Even as India’s fourth largest IT company Satyam searches for a new CEO, the country’s biggest software player Tata Consultancy Services is set to see a new face at the helm. N Chandrasekaran is stepping into the shoes of S Ramadorai, who has been MD and CEO of the Tata group’s flagship software arm since 1996.

Ramadorai, who turns 65 in October, will relinquish executive power as per the group’s retirement policy. He will, however, continue to be associated with TCS in a nonexecutive capacity and will be redesignated as vice-chairman (currently a non-existent post) for the next 10 years in line with group policies.

HOMECOMING PREMIERE FOR SLUMDOG NEXT WEEK (BT,Mum,16Jan09,Pg1)
Boyle makes 360 degrees turn to return with award winning film to Mumbai next Thursday

You needn’t go to LA to congratulate Danny Boyle and the cast of Slumdog Millionaire for the film’s success at the Golden Globes last weekend. Good news is that Boyle & Co — yes, the elusive A R Rahman as well, are returning to Mumbai on the 20th to hold the Indian premiere of the film here.

US and UK audiences have seen it already, but that was before Slumdog got Hollywood’s top entertainment critics’ recognition, now it’s India’s turn... and the anticipation for the award-winning film is huge.

The all-India release has been slated for Friday the 23rd, with a Hindi version — Slumdog Crorepati, also dubbed and readied for the janta. Boyle’s premiere is the previous night at the Imax Big Cinemas in Wadala. He wants it to be the largest premiere ever held in India and has invited all of Bollywood to fill the five screens on which the film will be shown.

Before the start, Boyle will visit each screen to meet the audience, talk about Slumdog, and to thank Mumbai especially for helping him make it. The evening will begin at 9 pm with Boyle and the cast of Slumdog walking the red carpet and taking photocalls.

According to the film’s PR agents, the British director is excited about the premiere. He is reported to have said, “This is going to be like a homecoming, because Mumbai is where I started my journey, and now after showing it around the world and picking up so many international awards, the film is making a 360 degrees turn and returning to where it all began.”

There is more. The Oscar nominations will be announced at 7.30 pm the same evening. Remember to congratulate Boyle when you see him... for getting the Golden Globes and making the Oscars shortlist. If you’re invited, that is.

Investment & Wealth Creation Advice:

Please note that our advice is primarily for investors and not for speculators. Investors typically invest with 12-60 month investment perspective. You will therefore find that our advice does not change substantially from issue to issue.

We expect Sensex to come down to 7000-8000 level in the next few months. So, it is going to be a very good time for investments in good stocks.

Also, those who want to invest in realty in India should wait for some time as the flat and land prices are expected to come down substantially in the next 3-4 quarters.

Do consult your investment advisor before making any investment decisions.

Do not purchase shares of a good company at a wrong price. Also, do not purchase shares of a bad company even at a very low price.

Do not put all your eggs in one basket. Diversify your portfolio to de-risk. Do not put more than 33% of your investible funds in stocks or mutual funds. Do not invest in stocks, mutual funds or realty when their prices are quite high. From the high levels, these prices normally come down by about 40-50% and that is when many people lose their hard earned money in a big way.

Make sure that you are not one of those big losers. Make sure that you invest when prices are low and divest when prices are high. Please note that 2009 is going to be a great year for investing your money in stocks, mutual funds & realty in India.
