DoCoMo, France Tele in last lap for Tata Tele pie (ET-10Sep08, P1)
THE race to induct a strategic partner in Tata Teleservices (TTSL) seems to have narrowed down to Japan’s NTT DoCoMo and European telecom giant France Telecom. The Tata Group is close to diluting its stake for around Rs 5,000 crore in the country’s sixth largest telecom operator, industry sources told ET.
Subbarao sticks to 8% growth peg (ET-10Sep08, P1)
JUST three days after taking over as governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Duvvuri Subbarao sounded positive on growth and a little less hawkish than his predecessor on inflation.
While he said the central bank was sticking to its earlier estimate of 8% growth, Mr Subbarao described the imminent drop in the headline rate as a ‘mathematical inevitability’. According to him, there has been some moderation in prices although there was no discernible trend and it was too early to take a call on inflation.
Fujitsu, NTT may put in counterbid for Axon (ET-10Sep08, P6)
THE market buzz on counter bid to Infosys Technologies’ $753-million offer to buy UKbased Axon Group has a new twist. Banking sources now believe a counter offer could come from Japanese IT giants Fujitsu Software Corp or NTTSoft.
ET could not independently verify the speculation, or the probability of a counter bid from any of these two. While the $18-billion Fujitsu was earlier in the fray to acquire Axon, NTT Soft was keen on SAP assets in Europe. Any counter bid to Infy’s offer—announced on August 25—could come as early as next week.
The latest speculation comes even as homegrown HCL Technologies is seen as another candidate to launch a rival offer.

Graft cases knock on SC door (TOI-10Sep08, P1)
UP Police Name 34 Judges In PF Scam, Ask SC For CBI Probe
New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh police has identified 34 sitting judges, including one in the Supreme Court, as among those allegedly involved in the embezzlement of provident fund money of class IV employees of the Ghaziabad court. The development extends the crisis of credibility facing government institutions to the judiciary as well and could perhaps jolt it into reconsidering whether to persist with the immunity that the judges enjoy.
Besides an apex court judge, those under the scanner include eight judges in the Allahabad high court, one each in the Uttarakhand and Calcutta HCs and 23 lower court judges.
Soon, smoking only on roads (TOI-10Sep08, P1)
Desperate to catch a smoke? From next month, you’ll have to head for the road or a park.
In an interesting directive issued by the Union health ministry under its Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places Rules, 2008, that ban tobacco consumption in government and private buildings from October 2, roads and parks do not come under the definition of a public place. However, cafes, restaurants, schools, pubs or discotheques, stadia, airports, hospitals and bus stands are covered by it.
Those caught smoking in these “public places’’ will be fined Rs 200. But health minister A Ramadoss has said the amount will be increased to Rs 1,000 in the future. Organisations that allow employees to smoke within their building premises will have shell out Rs 5,000 for every employee caught smoking.
‘More Indians eating beef in place of pulses’ (TOI-10Sep08, P12)
It’s A Cheaper Protein Source Than Dal: US Study
Beef is fast becoming popular in India as a source of protein intake after some pulses like dal became costlier than the meat, says the American agriculture department.
“Beef (buffalo meat) is increasingly becoming popular as a protein source compared to pulses, some of which have become more expensive than it,’’ the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said in a report.
In its ‘India Livestock and Products Annual 2008’, the USDA said both chicken and beef have “no specific religious sentiments attached’’ to their consumption. But it also quoted Indian census to point out that Hindus, who comprise around 80% of the total population, do not consume beef while 13% Muslims do not eat pork.
“Nevertheless, the younger generation is changing its food habits to non-vegetarianism and other processed foods. With rising income levels, domestic meat consumption has the potential to rise further,’’ it noted, adding that beef and poultry meat are popular in India because of their cheap prices.
Eat more meat, raise global heat (TOI-10Sep08, P1)
R K Pachauri, chief of the Nobel prize winning UN climate change panel, has spiced up the debate on kebabs and steaks by suggesting that the best and easiest way of stemming climate change is not to eat meat at least one day each week. What’s eating meat got to do with climate change, you may ask. A lot, actually.
Another Big Bang (TOI-10Sep08, P1)
Scientists at an underground lab in Switzerland will launch an experiment on Wednesday to re-enact the Big Bang to explain the origins of the universe. The experiment has led to fears of doomsday in many parts of the world.

...says Gautam Singhania of his experience in an F1 on Magny-Cours, France
You have not lived until you’ve experienced the speed and thrill of racing a Formula One car around a Grand Prix track. And Gautam Singhania, who celebrated his 43rd birthday yesterday, knows all about life and living in the fast lane. Recently, he got invited to the Circuit de Nevers, Magny-Cours, France, to drive an F1 car there on the track where Brazilian Felipe Massa won the French Grand Prix for Ferrari in June.
What did Singhania do? What do you think! He grabbed the opportunity with both hands, slipped behind the wheel and vroooomed off. “For me, it was a dream,” admitted the hotshot behind the glam wheels. He was driving a Williams FI car of 2001 vintage, but it was still fast enough for Singhania to go “a tad below 300 on the straight and 80 on the Uturns” on this 2.74-mile track that has 17 turns with names like the Estoril Corner and Adelaide Hairpin.
